About us

Oil and gas have been produced in the North Sea for decades under challenging conditions. It has given us a reliable energy supply, value creation and a world leading industry – an industry built on technological development, engineering, and expertise.

Wellstrøm will take this story forward in a sustainable manner – thousands of oil and gas wells at the end of production must be permanently plugged for the future. Today’s solution using cement has not changed significantly over the past 50 years.

We are changing the way the industry goes forward:

  • Game-changing technology
  • Environmentally friendly footprint
  • Driven by a team with proven execution ability

Bringing together industry-leading expertice

We combine the knowledge, experience and creativity of three specialist companies to develop sealing technologies for the oil and gas industries. Drawing on the industry-leading backgrounds and a track record of decades of innovation, the Wellstrøm team is working closely with the partner companies to rapidly develop and commercialize the new technologies.

  • More than 20 years of R&D in alloy sealing technologies are utilized to create the plug
  • Metal and technology are patented
  • The concept of bismuth alloys for wellbore sealing originates from Rawwater
  • Wellstrøm combines Rawwater’s bismuth plug with Aarbakke Innovation’s electrical heating technology to create a superior wellbore sealing
  • TotalEnergies being the key industrial supporter of Wellstrøm and the services
  • Headed up by Gert Rege through his company K2 Oilfiled Services

Milestones

2024

  • Signed with NZTC, TotalEnergies, Harbour Energy, Repsol, Petrobras, Equinor and Blue Nord ASA to develop the T-3000 through-tubing alloy plugging technology
  • Further funding from NRC

2023

IKM together with partners entered the ownership side in 2023. IKM brings inexperience from cessation and decommissioning

Securing Equinor as customer

Launched T-3000 through-tubing concept

Full-scale testing at Ullrigg in Stavanger headed up by Norce. Results as follows:

    • Ability to heat alloy and control heating electrically
    • Ability to form
      • a high differential pressure seal,
      • a plug in “rubbelised” annular cement,
      • a plug in drilling mud (WBM),
      • a plug when you have flowing gas

2022

Small-scale testing, setting plugs in flowing gas.
Successful full-scale yard testing in drilling mud (WBM).

2021

A P&A and slot recovery alliance formed together with Odfjell Energy, TCO, Ardyne, Altus Intervention, Interwell and more

NRC funding successfully obtained

2020

Wellstrøm established to combine the knowledge, experience and creativity of three specialist companies to develop sealing technologies for the oil and gas industries.

TotalEnergies becoming the first industrial sponsor of Wellstrøm

2018

Aarbakke Innovation, on request by a North Sea operator, developed the first high temperature electric powered heating system (up to 700 deg C). The system also incorporates distributed temperature and acoustic logging, becoming also a very powerful logging and barrier integrity verification system.

Since then, Aarbakke Innovation has perhaps become the leading expert in wellbore heating, having provided flow through heating solutions as well as the highly controlled heating required for the unique Wellstrøm solutions.

2017

Two projects funded by Innovate UK commence, to further develop expertise in expanding metal seal technology.
Proof of Concept project in collaboration with Sellafield/NNL, the first steps into the lower temperature alloys.

2012

Attracting the interest of the Supermajors, leading to a £1M Joint Industry Project (JIP) development programme to deliver 7″ plugs for the North Sea.

2010

Two 4″ bismuth plugs are successfully installed onshore in Suffield gas field, Alberta; approved by Energy Resources Conservation Board (ERCB)

2009

Rawwater and partner fund development of bismuth alloy technology.
Workshop testing of electrically deployed 4” bismuth plugs to 5000 psig (345barg) is completed.

2005

Shell International Exploration and Production (SIEP) introduces Rawwater to downhole electrical heating system.

2004

With part funding from the UK Government, Rawwater successfully demonstrated the validity of using a pyrotechnic fuse for deploying 2″ bismuth plugs.

2000

Rawwater engineering department is founded by oil and gas industry expert, Dr Bob Eden, to combat the problem of leaking well abandonments.
Receiving backing from SIEP for this work.
Combining oil and gas expertise with extensive experience in expanding metal technology, Bob Eden invents the world’s first downhole metal-to-metal seal plugging technology: the Bismuth Plug

1985

Henning Hansen, Aarbakke Innnovation, started developing wellbore electric powered systems for offshore platform- and subsea wells. www.hansenenergy.biz

Successfully qualified electrically set alloy barrier

Wellstrøm, together with its key industrial sponsor TotalEnergies, is pleased to announce that it successfully set and qualified the first ever fully rigless, electrically powered, fully controllable and real-time monitored 9-5/8” x 13-3/8” remedial alloy plug to meet industry required guidelines in gas as per the design on its first ever deployment. Uniquely, the plug was further set through perforations against flowing gas in a weighted mud system, another first.
